Dr. Michal Sarfati

Dr. Michal Sarfati (PhD. MSc. BSc.) is an expert in the fields of sustainability and environmental responsibility in the public and business sectors. Dr. Sarfati has many years of experience in promoting sustainable urbanism; writing strategic plans for sustainability and the environment; researching, writing and editing applied manuals; leading organizational processes for sustainable management; fundraising for environmental projects in diverse fields; Providing nature-based solutions for the development of a sustainable public space; Recruiting the public for a sustainable lifestyle; Ability to write professionally and fluently in Hebrew and English and make scientific information accessible to the public.

Among her clients are local authorities, government ministries and third sector organizations.

Michal is an ecologist-entomologist and has a doctorate in ecology from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, a master’s degree in ecology and desert studies from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences and biotechnology from Tel Hai College.

As part of her doctorate, Michal studied evolutionary processes between seed-eating insects and plants in extreme environmental conditions, and during the research she discovered and defined several new insect species for science.

Michal has been engaged for many years in the research and development of viable alternatives to conventional pest control in agriculture, and among other things has developed products for ecological control of pests of economic importance.

Michal graduated from the “Mimshak” program, in which she dealt with the accessibility of the applied knowledge infrastructure on various issues of sustainability as a tool for municipal economic development and wrote a document of recommendations on urban sustainability for officials in local government. The implementation of the actions indicated in the document may result in reducing social gaps, improving the quality of service, improving the quality of life for the resident, and empowering the authority.

Michal established and managed the sustainability department in the municipality of Holon between 2018 and 2021.All the areas in which the sustainability department dealt with were initiated and managed by Michal as part of her understanding of the municipal issue and her vision of the field, leading to a change of perception and sustainable lifestyles of the employees and the residents of the city.
